How to Treat Slightly Cloudy Water: A Comprehensive Guide
Share
Identify the Cause
When you can see the floor but water is cloudy
Before treating the cloudy water, it’s essential to identify the root cause. Here are some common culprits:
-
Chemical Imbalance: The most common cause of cloudy water is an imbalance in the pool's chemicals, especially pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels.
-
Poor Filtration: A malfunctioning or inefficient filtration system can fail to remove impurities from the water.
-
Environmental Factors: Pollen, dust, and other debris can enter the pool and make the water cloudy.
-
Organic Contaminants: Swimmers bring in organic matter like sweat, sunscreen, and other residues, which can cloud the water
-
Test and balance your pool
Always start by testing your water using Bliss Pool Test Strips. Follow the action plan to adjust your water chemistry to within ideal range. Wait at least 1 hour after making any adjustments.
-
Check and clean the pool filter
A clean pool filter is crucial for clear water, as it removes dirt and debris from swimmers and the environment. If the filter is dirty, it won’t efficiently capture small particles, leading to cloudy water. Ensure your filter is operating correctly, without any leaks or unusual noises. If the pool’s filter system isn’t functioning properly small particles remain suspended in the water, making it look cloudy. Clean or “backwash” your filter, according to your owner’s manual, to remove build up.
-
Clean
Skim the water's surface to remove all visible debris, brush all of the walls, floor, and steps of the pool. Focus on areas with little or no circulation. Empty the skimmer basket.
-
Vacuum your pool
Set the filter to "waste" and vacuum out all settled debris.
-
Add Bliss Water Clarifier
Add Pool Clarifier.

If your water is still cloudy consider using Bliss Pool Flocculant
Use only in pools that can be vacuumed. If your pool cannot be vacuumed, use a water clarifier instead.
-
Add Flocculant: Add the recommended amount of flocculant to the pool water.
-
Turn Off the Pump: Let the flocculant work overnight with the pump off.
-
Vacuum to Waste: The next day, vacuum the settled debris to waste, not through the filter.
The issue may be due to microscopic bacteria and debris that float in the water and can pass through the filter. If the clarifier has accumulated these particles into large clumps, but they haven't been filtered out, you may need to use a flocculant to remove them.
Bliss Pool Flocculants will gather suspended particles into larger clumps, which will then settle at the bottom of the pool when the filter is turned off, making them easy to vacuum out

7. Re-entry
Test water again Using Bliss Pool test Strips (all 7 parameters) and make any final adjustments using the “Test” section of the app. You can swim in it once all levels are in the ideal range. Re-entry to a treated pool above 4 ppm free chlorine is prohibited due to the risk of severe bodily injury.
8. Preventing cloudy water in the future
Test and balance your pool 2x weekly using Bliss Pool Test Strips. A balanced pool helps prevent cloudy water. Make sure to circulate pool water for at least 8 hours per day & follow the Bliss Pool easycare system (weekly) on the app to help maintain clean and clear water.
