How to Treat Foul Smelling Water

How to Treat Foul Smelling Water

Swimming pools are a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise, and cool off during the warmer months. However, one of the most unpleasant surprises for pool owners is discovering that their pool water has developed a foul smell. This not only deters you from enjoying your pool but can also be a sign of underlying issues that need to be addressed. In this blog post, we'll explore the common causes of foul-smelling pool water and provide a step-by-step guide on how to treat and prevent this problem.

Common Causes of Foul Smelling Pool Water

  1. Imbalanced Chemicals: The most common reason for foul-smelling water is an imbalance in the pool's chemical levels. Low chlorine levels, for instance, can lead to the growth of bacteria and algae, which can produce unpleasant odors.

  2. Organic Contaminants: Leaves, dirt, sunscreen, sweat, and other organic materials can accumulate in your pool. As these decompose, they can create a bad smell.

  3. Algae Growth: Algae can grow rapidly in warm water with inadequate sanitation. Some types of algae can produce strong, musty odors.

  4. Poor Circulation: If your pool's filtration system is not working properly or the water circulation is inadequate, it can lead to stagnant water, which can become a breeding ground for bacteria and algae.

  5. High Combined Chlorine Levels: Also known as chloramines, combined chlorine forms when free chlorine in the pool water binds with contaminants such as sweat, urine, or other nitrogenous compounds. This can lead to a strong chlorine-like odor.

1.Test and balance your pool

Always start by testing your water using Bliss Pool Test Strips. Chemical imbalances can cause unpleasant odors. Follow the action plan to adjust all water chemistry to within ideal range. Wait at least 1 hour after making any adjustments.

  1. Check and clean the pool filter

A clean pool filter is crucial for eliminating foul odors by removing organic debris and contaminants. Ensure your filter operates correctly, without leaks or unusual noises. If not functioning properly, odor-causing particles remain in the water. Clean or “backwash” your filter as per your owner’s manual to remove buildup.

  1. Clean the pool

Skim the water's surface to remove all visible debris, brush the walls, floor, and steps of the pool, focus on areas with little or no circulation. Empty the skimmer basket.

  1. Shock pool in the evening hours

Add X Bliss Pool Shock Treatment(s) to your pool in the evening hours.

5. Run the filter pump for 12-24 hours

Allow the filter pump to run for 12-24 hours to allow sufficient time for the shock to circulate and eliminate algae and other contaminants.

6. Backwash or clean the filter

Clean or “backwash” the filter according to your owner's manual to remove any trapped debris and contaminants.

7. Add Bliss Pool Water Clarifier

Add X Bliss Pool Water Clarifier. Many foul odors in pool water are caused by the accumulation of organic debris and contaminants. By removing these particles, a clarifier can help reduce or eliminate the sources of the foul smells.

8. Re-entry

Test water again (all 7 parameters) and make any final adjustments using the “Test” section of the app. You can swim in it once all levels are in the ideal range. Re-entry to a treated pool above 4 ppm free chlorine is prohibited due to the risk of severe bodily injury.

9. Next steps

If the foul smell continues despite following these steps, there may be underlying issues that need addressing.

10. Preventing foul odors in the future

Test and balance your pool 2x weekly using Bliss Pool Test Strips. A balanced pool helps prevent foul odors from returning. Brush pool surfaces weekly, circulate pool water at least 8 hours per day. Follow the Bliss Pool easycare system (weekly) on the app to help maintain clean and clear water. If you have any questions, please contact us.
